Summary of "Glimmers of the Pattern" and appended interview

Section the First: POV Rodel Ituralde, Nobleman of Arad Doman
Setting: Arad Doman

I was just about to begin my reread, so I'm at a loss to explain
exactly how this section fits into the grand scheme. Basically,
we have this character Lord Ituralde of Arad Doman, called the Wolf for his military prowess, who has remained loyal to King Alsalam and fighting with Domani lords who have sworn for the Dragon Reborn.
Alsalam appeared to be going mad, and now he has disappeared, perhaps because of his Council (although they might not have a clue to his whereabouts either). Ituralde is set to meet with the the Dragonsworn (which include a small contingent of Taraboners as well as Domani) under the White Ribbon of parley. There he reveals that he has gotten orders from the King to gather men and sweep south to stop the Seanchan and push them back. The Domani and Taraboners rally enthusiastically to him. Importantly, most of his orders from the King (or supposedly so) have sent him to and fro and have in general been ineffective. The order to move against the Seanchan seems to be the first order from the King that makes sense, and in fact a Gray Man was sent to prevent it from
reaching Ituralde (a Lady was killed offstage). That would indicate that the Shadow is controlling things in AD, but the King still lives or something. Graendal is most likely involved--this is an excellent way to create chaos. Does anyone remember if she had Alsalam in her entourage?

Section the Second: POV Eamon Valda
Setting: Ghealdan

Valda has an army of over 9,000 Children somewhere in Ghealdan. The bulk of the section is a conversation between him and the head Questioner Asunawa. Asunawa is trying to get the Children to march across Altara into Murandy and against a rumored Andoran army there. Valda points out that there is an AS army in Altara and could be the very rumored army in Murandy. He also thinks it might be useful to find out how the Seanchan "tame" channelers so the Children can use them to drive al'Thor out.
At the end, they leave for a meeting of the Council, and apparently are ready to move somewhere, but Valda thinks "whether Asunawa would see it with him was antoher matter." Ho hum, I never liked parts about the Children.

Section the Third: POV Gabrelle Sedai, Wardress of Logain
Setting: Near the BT, Andor

Gabrelle and Toveine are on a ride with Logain. The Reds who were bonded at the BT have been scheming to break free, but apprently no plans yet. Logain seems to be aware of it, yet he trusts his AS more than many of the Asha'man--for reasons that aren't as obvious to the Gabrelle as to us.
Gabrelle has been bedding Logain to get information from him--although it doesn't seem to be working very well--and Toviene likes this arrangement because he doesn't pay as much attention to her, giving her more freedom to plot. During the ride an Asha'man, one Atal Mishraile, meets with Logain. He says that the M'Hael has permitted Logain to go on recruiting trips, and questions why Logain would want to. He suggests that if Logain
is bored, he should join Taim's private lessons at the palace. Given Logain's hatred of him, felt by Gabrelle over the bond, Mishraile is Taim's man. This leads Gabrelle to the realization that there is a stronger rift between them than mere mistrust. None of Taim's men have taken AS Wardresses, so they have no information from that faction. After Mishraile parts with a few cold words, Logain hurries back to the BT in order to make "preparations". Toveiene and Gabrelle will try to go with
him, and Gabrelle remarks that his determination makes it clear that he is "riding to war". Interestingly enough, I would note that Gabrelle wonders whether Logain and/or Taim have begun to go mad, and yet she didn't mention anything about the Cleansing (which should be topic du jour at the BT) indicating that the Cleansing has not occured. It has been two weeks since their capture, apparently.

Section the Fourth: POV Yukiri Sedai, Gray Ajah
Setting: White Tower

Now we see a bit more of the compicated AS situation. This POV ties together the BA hunt, the Ajah war at the Tower, and the Sitter mystery in Salidar. First, it warrants noting that the tension in the Tower has reached a peak--no AS leaves her quarters without a Warder or another AS of her Ajah, and everybody is suspicious of plotting, even within the Ajahs. Also, there is again no mention of the Cleansing, which should have been felt at TV, although they would not have known what it was. Nowhere in the Prologue is the Cleansing referred to, indicating that these events occur synchronously with WH. Meidani, one of the Gray rebels who returned to the Tower is reporting to Yukiri.
They pass 3 Browns--Marris Thornhill, Doraise Mesianos, and Elin Warrel --but I don't think that's significant. Later they pass Pritalle Nerbaijan and Atuan Larisett, two Yellows. Atuan is now known to them to be Black. Meidani tells Yukiri that the Yellow ex-rebels Celestin and Annharid are trying to find out who Atuan is working with in the Yellow. Yukiri suggets that Meidani try to re-establish her old friendship with Elaida from when they were novices together; Meidani has tried but Alviarin has put her off, but now Alvy has gone off somewhere suddenly, and judging
by her packing she'll be gone for a few days. Yukiri is interested in who has access to Elaida's papers and is learning of everything so quickly; maybe they'll be finding out Alvy's affiliation soon enough. Then Seaine and Bernaile Gelbarn (a White ex-rebel) show up. Seaine wants to talk to Yukiri about the "second mystery"; that is, what the Ajah heads are up to, which was the original reason the Sitters discovered Pevara and Seaine
playing with the Oath Rod. Seaine asks Yukiri whether the Gray Ajah head pushed the choice for a new Sitter (after the split) without the usual mechanism the Ajah uses--Yukiri acknowledges that is what happened. Seaine says that she asked the other Sitters and they all agreed that their Ajah heads picked an odd choice for Sitter--either one that was too young, or one that was formerly Sitter but returned to the position in an unusual way. Uh oh! The WT also seems to have a Hall Mystery!
This would indicate either (A) the 5 split Ajahs are working across the break, a theory I had suggested once, or (B) the Ajahs on each side of the break are expecting something and this Hall scenario is part of their plans for it. Seaine is going to try to puzzle out this riddle--good thing because Siuan is making no headway on it. Finally, Yukiri still thinks that the Salidar army is stuck in Murandy, so things should be getting exciting soon.

Section the Fifth: POV Gawyn Trakand
Setting: Dorlan, near Tar Valon

Gawyn and the Younglings, as well as Covarla's remnant from the failed BT attack, are held up in Dorlan by an army that appeared out of nowhere on the road to TV; Gawyn guesses correctly that it is the Rebel army come. Tarna, who visited Salidar, and Katerine, who escaped the Aiel after being captured at Dumai's Wells, arrived later and are not pleased to find their way to the Tower blocked. In the story, Gawyn is thinking about Egwene when an AS arrives in Dorlan. Narenwin has somehow gotten
past the Rebels and is there to take command of the Red mission and give Elaida's order to the Younglings. Katerine and Tarna decide to try to take the boat that Narenwin took around the Rebels back to TV. Gawyn asks Narenwin about Elayne, but Tarna tells him that she is with the Rebels.

Post war zu lang hier noch der zweite Teil.
Befürchte ja, daß der Prolog wieder über 100 Seiten lang ist, eh es richtig losgeht.

TEIL II:

Section the Sixth: POV Davram Bashere
Setting: outside Caemlyn

Bashere is watching the camps that have sprung up just outside Caemlyn.
They are Andoran nobles supporting the claim of Arymilla Marne, some of whose supporters have given up their own (better) claims to support her. Bashere smells Daes Dae'mar. The Saldaeans and Aiel, though, are forced to sit and watch because foreign support for Elayne could weaken her Andoran support. After a brief episode where the Queen's Guards protect refugees on the road, Bashere returns to the camp to find everyone calling his name and crowded around his tent. Deira Bashere has been seriously wounded by men who she found searching through their tent. She attacked them but was slashed; by the end of the POV, she is bandaged up and will recover. The men, though were found dead just outside the camp, killed by wounds by a small, thin knife wound behind the ear. Bashere reasons that there were two or more other men who killed the spies. He then tells one of his officers, "You know where to find the man who came to me yesterday? Find him, and tell him I agree, but there will be a few more than we talked about." Looks like Bashere plans to move; the man could be Logain or Taim.

Section the Seventh: POV Samitsu Sedai, Yellow Ajah
Setting: Cairhien

Samitsu has been charged by Cadsuane with keeping the peace in Cairhien.
Her power is being encroached upon by Sashalle, an AS who was stilled at Dumai's Wells but restored by Flinn and held in high esteem by the WOs.
Rand had named Dobraine Steward of Cairhien, and "a man who had been in rebellion against him" (Darlin) Steward of Tear. It also seems that 31 AS, 5 Reds included, has sworn to Rand, and there has been more AS bonding Asha'man; Sashalle is one of them. Now Lady Ailil is trying to become High Lady of House Riatin, but Lord Toram has not been found dead yet. Samitsu realizes that Sashalle no longer looks Ageless, wonders how stilling or Healing caused it, and wonders what else has changed on the inside. Then the head servant at the palace reports that an Ogier and a man have come to look for masonwork, but Stedding Tsofu has said that no masons are available. The AS go to the kitchen; Samitsu realizes that it is Loial and Asha'man Karldin (who calls himself "Master
Underhill, heh). They are come looking for Rand to tell him that they have finished what he asked them to do (I can't remember what that was... close the Waygates?) She tells them Rand was "alive as of a few days ago", indicating that this occurs near the beginning of WH. Loial and Karldin make to leave, but then a servant woman comes in screaming that Dobraine has been killed. They all head up to Dobraine's suite.
Dobraine has been stabbed and lost a lot of blood, but Samitsu Delves and sees that he is still alive, but Healing might kill him. She tries anyway; he survives but is still in serious condition. Karldin searches the bodies of the two attackers, finding a note with Dobraine's (forged) handwriting, saying that the bearers should be allowed to come to his apartments to retrieve something. Loial says, "This is very bad! If there were more than two, Karldin, if they found--!" But the AS don't have time to find out what Loial knows; just then, Logain and a party of Asha'man and AS arrive and the section ends.
