Hallo,

After about 15 hours of game play in Dungeon Siege, I`ve had a
revelation: I don`t have to like this game.
I feel so much better now
The game is beautiful, yes, but the game play (in single player)
is tedious, boring, unrewarding, and apparently pointless as far
as I can tell.
Unless someone can tell me that the game gets much better, or that
the payoff at the end is so incredible that I should keep going, I
think I`m going back to join the travelers-with-terrible-accents
and hang up my sword and retire. Someone else can save the kingdom.
The game play is like being on a treadmill. The path forward is
narrow and explicit, with little or no choice. There is forwards
and backwards, and backwards is pointless. Forwards involves
clicking a bit farther down the path to move, then pressing the M
and or H keys until the battle is over or someone dies, and either
pressing F9 to quicksave if you survive or <CTRL>-L if someone dies
to reload and try again.
Wave after wave of functionally similar monsters gets very tiring
after a while. Advancement is automatic and there are almost no
decisions to make. You get stronger and the monsters get stronger.
Big deal. If you and the monsters spent the whole game at level 1,
I`m not sure you`d notice the difference.
There is nothing to look forward to. There isn`t even any stated
goal yet to speak of. Ok, they want the story to unfold over time,
but so far it`s just a lame series of excuses for traveling ever
onwards down the never ending narrow road.
I (like many others) wanted so much to like this game. It had a lot
going for it, and the 3D engine is a great accomplishment, but I
feel that in almst every other way the developers have failed
miserably.
